We are happy to launch a new e-commerce website design for Register Family Farm, a family-and-veteran-owned bee farm in the Florida Panhandle. Register Family Farm sells honey and honey products at farmers’ markets and on the web. The first time we first spoke to Melissa Register about her family business she said, “If it were not my family’s business, I would not use this website.”
When Melissa retired from the Army last year she moved home to help run the family business as managing partner. Melissa’s career as a US Army Major prepared her for managing large projects, including assistant planner for the medical withdrawal of Iraq in 2011, commanding at Fort Bragg, NC and serving as a medical administrator in the White House Medical Unit. The Register’s have high standards for the operations and management of the farm and they lean on each other's expertise to make decisions. The apiary is run by brothers Joseph & Jeremiah, both veteran US Army Infantry Officers and Rangers, and day-to-day operations and logistics are managed by her mom Shelley and dad Gerry, who is also a contractor for Chick-Fil-A Restaurants.
While the family farm is smaller than the US military, managing 1,000 bee colonies and 50 products has its own unique challenges and designing a new website was a top priority. The original website served its purpose but was outdated and not mobile-ready. The e-commerce platform was also outdated and even had some major problems that needed to be fixed like failing to charge customers for shipping on some orders.
As a Shopify Partner, Menadena knew that a Shopify site would be the best way to solve these problems efficiently and at a reasonable cost. One of our main concerns is to make sure our clients have the website support they need in case of our absence. Shopify not only provides great 24/7/365 customer support, but there is also a large, easily-accessible developer community that can step in at any time to fill our place should the need arise.
We were also concerned with making sure that once the site was up and running it would get found by new customers. Shopify provides all the tools we needed for great onsite search engine optimization (SEO), including title tags, meta descriptions, URLs, ALT tags, sitemap.xml and robots.txt files, and automatically generated canonical URL tags. We also set up a Moz Pro campaign using Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools to track and optimize the site's performance in organic search over time.
To make sure the website would get found in local search, we also added and updated local business listings for Register Family Farm. This included Bing Places for Business, Google My Business, and Local Harvest, an online resource for consumers who want to buy local food. As a result, Register Family Farm not only comes up in search results but it also has local business listing on Bing Maps, Google Maps and Local Harvest with reviews.
